Street Life

In the autumn of 2015, I was selected to be the International Residency Coordinator at La Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice. Over three months, I made an entire new body of work, principally using printmaking techniques, but also incorporating photography, digital graphics, and acrylic transfer techniques. I was exploring walking as artistic practice and wrote an extensive research-based blog called ‘Walking in Circles’.

All this work is site-responsive and based on observation. The starting point for exploration was the fabric of the city itself, the walks I made thorough it, the research that informed my exploration of it, and the stories that were recounted to me during my time there. There are three distinct series of new work using printmaking techniques; Street Life, Give and Take and Just Breathe. Street Life is a series of one-off unique monotypes, influenced by observations of actual wall surfaces, graffiti and colour combinations, existent in Venice. Each print is 50cm x 70cm without a frame or border.
